Creator/producer Anita Sugimura Holsapple explains:

More than 40% of our troops are parents.  We are living in a new normal and we’ve got to do something to help these troops!

“Mental Valor” is the voice of our community … our troops, their families and those who offer support. It provides an inside look into the strength and courage of our military family among the challenges they are currently facing with repeated deployments, separation and the rising numbers of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Since the war began in Iraq and Afghanistan:

  • More than 6000 troops have died, 5000 which were U.S. troops
  • More than 30,000 U.S. troops have been wounded
  • TBI and PTSD are increasing at a rapid rate
  • There are not enough facilities to treat all our returning troops

“Mental Valor” is a project of love from my own family experiences.  It is through my eyes growing up as a military brat that I  developed the idea for “Mental Valor.”

From my step-father’s three  tours of duty in Vietnam with the 9th Marines and my mother’s survival as a young child of the atomic bombing of Japan, I attempted to understand the social context of the warfare and society.   I wanted to enlighten, educate and bring understanding to the hows and whys of psychological trauma and resiliency.

“Mental Valor” is a non-scripted, first-person account from service members, their families, mental health experts, community and military leaders, including Secretray of Defense Robert Gates.

“Mental Valor” showcases the amazing and compassionate people who are diligently working to better the lives of all our service members:

In the documentary we hear a young Marine and his family try to cope with their ongoing daily struggle with PTSD, while another solider relearns his life after a traumatic brain injury left him missing a third of this skull, and another family deals with the loss of their service member child.

We hear of the amazing grassroots efforts of everyday people wanting to offer their talents, expertise and support to help our service member and their family.

“Mental Valor” talks to the movers and shakers who have recognized the issue and seek to find answers and solutions.  It is a story of strength, hope and overcoming adversity.
