Never Give Up: A Fiction Short Story

Spotlight

Three months and 122 calls and it has finally happened – I have an interview. I know things are tough out there and there are many qualified young women for the position but at least give me a chance to show my skills.

I just hope to be allowed enough time to demonstrate how I can add value to the company. I have the skills, the appearance, the knowledge, and the ambition to succeed.

I know that there will be a lot of traveling for this position but that’s fine with me. I am a single young woman and it will give me the opportunity to see the world. It might even give me a chance to meet some man and that I could end up with a boyfriend or even a husband. I had better stop dreaming and get dressed.

Now having showered, I feel fresh and clean. I’m sure glad that this small apartment has a large walk-in closet, for I do own quite a few nice outfits that I can wear to this interview.

I am stumped. Business suit with a white blouse, or a pair of white slacks with a nice silk blouse and a jacket. No, maybe it’s better if I wear a dress. A dress will show off my legs and also will display my nice body curves.

How do I know I have nice body curves? All the guys I have dated have always commented to me that they think I look like a beauty queen. But they probably say those things because they are angling for something from me, if you know what I mean.

I have spent a great deal of time and money obtaining these curves, what with three visits a week to the gym, a low-calorie diet, no smoking, and just a little alcohol a week (one glass only) .This is how I can keep my 5ft. 8in. body weighing in at 118 pounds of low body fat in great shape.

Yes, that’s what I will wear, the short flaming red skirt and that white low-cut silk blouse. I know it’s not in the best of taste but it will surely get me noticed. But do I want to get noticed in that manner? It’s my skills I want to exhibit for the interview, not my body.

Oh, I am so mixed up in trying to figure out what to wear. That’s because it has been so long since I had an interview. My mind is a little confused as to the proper demeanor when talking to the interviewer.

I’ve got it. I will wear those white slacks. They show off my long legs without the interviewer seeing any skin. Then I’ll wear one-inch heels with the pink blouse, and I’ll wrap a white sweater around my shoulders so that I look hip. Yes, now I am almost ready to go out into the world for my interview.

Purse, yes; money, yes; keys, yes. It’s takeoff time.

I wish myself luck and now I head to the office of the man who will interview me. He is the dance director hiring chorus girls for the road company of “Chorus Line.”
