Bits and Pieces of Changes on Social Media

Social media sites are continually tinkering with their platforms. Here are a few of the changes I have run across this week:

Google+:

The image at the top of your profile has just gotten much larger. No, your photo has not been enlarged. The space available has been enlarged. This means back to the drawing board to create a correctly sized image.

(I just noticed on the Miller Mosaic Google+ company page that the company hot link has been automatically overlaid on the image.)

LinkedIn:

You can no longer upload your resume into your profile. Instead, you must manually enter the information from your resume.

Amazon:

The “like” button (and tally) underneath a book title on Amazon has disappeared from the U.S. Amazon site. Of course, with Amazon this could reappear. But as with the removal of tags, it is probably unlikely that the “like” button will return.

(Note for those authors who use Amazon html for their book descriptions on Amazon: There is a major change in when you can use Amazon html. Click here to read about this on a Kindleboards forum.)

And an obstacle on Goodreads that should be removed:

I tried to upload the new book cover for my romantic suspense spy thriller CIA FALL GUY to my author profile on Goodreads. Nope, no can do. Only a “librarian” can do this. Luckily, I am in a Facebook group with a designated Goodreads “librarian.” Unluckily there was a glitch in her uploading the new book cover and she is now trying a workaround.

Question to Goodreads: Why would you not allow authors to change a book cover themselves? Is this obstacle user friendly?

News flash: Facebook is rolling out a new News Feed. More changes to deal with!

If you have been checking your own social media accounts, you may have found other changes. If so, do leave the information in a comment below.

A book publisher tweeted on Twitter that, when he receives a query from a book author, he first Googles the author’s name before he reads the query. While he did not explain why he does this (a tweet has a maximum of 140 characters), we can assume because he wants to know if the author [...]

In the LinkedIn sub-group “Ebooks, Ebook Readers—SELF-PUBLISHING” I read about a new site — Monkeybars.net — that sounded very innovative. I asked questions of Fergal O’Moore, who had posted the announcement about the site, and his answers were so detailed that I got his permission to use his information as a guest post here. (Fergal [...]
