The Book “Social Media Is a Cocktail Party” Effectively Introduces Social Media

by Phyllis Zimbler Miller on April 7, 2010

While the book “Social Media Is a Cocktail Party” by Jim Tobin with Lisa Braziel is copyrighted 2008 — and things change very quickly in the social media world — this is an excellent introductory book for companies/organizations that don’t yet “get” the value of utilizing social media marketing.

As the authors point out, they are often asked how social media marketing is measured. And the truth is that measurements on the Internet are much more accurate than trying to measure print or television ads.

In social media marketing (also known as Internet marketing) you can track how many people come to your website, where that traffic is coming from (from a Facebook fan page or Twitter, for example), and numerous other pieces of information.

This book lays out the advantages of social media marketing in a non-jargon way that makes it crystal clear why, if your business or organization is NOT using social media strategies, you are losing out to your competition.

Particularly if your target market is young people, you need to hang out online where these young people are. This means that you need a Facebook fan page that is integrated with an effective interactive website and an active Twitter account. That is a great book, Phyllis. I actually use it as a marketing tool when I am proposing to my clients that they have to pursue a social media marketing campaign after their site has been search engine optimized. I give them a copy long with my proposal with certain pages tabbed and highlighted. It really helps open a dialogue.

While I do believe there are industries where social media just doesn’t make sense, they are usually vary narrow niche markets. The vast majority of businesses can really benefit from social media marketing and this book really helps my clients understand where the value is for them.

Bob –

How clever to give them a copy of the book “with certain pages tabbed and highlighted.” That way there’s a much better chance they will actually look at some of the content of the book.

I love your ideas!
