Internet Business 101: What is a guest blog post?

The simple answer is that a guest blog post is when you write a blog post for someone else’s blog.

The more complicated answer is how you use this specific strategy of Internet marketing to promote your brand, book or business.

Of course, it helps to be connected on the Internet with people who are looking for guest posts.

As I’ve mentioned before, BloggerLinkUp.com is a great (free) way to get an email delivered to your inbox with info on the people looking for guest bloggers (or interviewees).

I answered one such announcement on Monday morning, and a few hours later my interview by Norm Goldman of BookPleasures.com was live with the coolest photo “slide”:

I’m also a member of the LinkedIn group The Blog Zone started by Mike Clough of BestBizPractices.org. In his weekly email to group members, Mike announced TheBloggersBulletin.org, a new blog for which we could ask for login info in order to publish guest posts. I immediately did so:

Number One Rule of Blogging: Make It Easy for People to Read What You Write

The bottom line is that guest blog posts offer an opportunity to promote your brand, book or business in front of new audiences. But you do have to be willing to seek out these opportunities, jump on them rather than add to an ever-growing “to do” list, and put in the effort to write the posts.

Plus, of course, it’s then a good idea to help disseminate the permalink for the guest post. I use Twitter for this and include #fb at the end of the tweets. This #fb sends the tweet automatically into my Facebook status update. Thus, with one tweet that includes a link, two different target markets are alerted to a new interview or guest post.
