I guess I am just not interesting enough to be followed on Twitter.

This is such a sad comment because it’s not true. Anyone who learns how to effectively have followers (and not by means of software that automatically adds tons of followers to your account) can be interesting enough to be followed on Twitter.

The secret behind getting followers on Twitter is a) sharing links to information of interest connected to your brand and b) participating in conversations connected to your brand.

One such way to get followers is to participate in tweetchats, such as the weekly #smallbizchat at 8-9 p.m. Eastern on Wednesdays. Melinda Emerson (@smallbizlady) features a guest each week on a specific topic of interest to small businesses. And if you participate with interesting tweets during the tweetchat, you will get followers from that participation.

Another way is to use tweetbeep.com (similar to Google alerts) to notify you of people on Twitter using keywords you’ve tracking. Then reply to people asking questions related to those keywords.

One more important point – using a clear headshot photo instead of a company logo is better for getting Twitter followers. Drew Gerber of PitchRate.com said that, as an experiment, the company switched from using the headshot of an employee to the company logo – and new followers of @pitchrate on Twitter immediately fell off. The employee’s photo went back up.
